U.S. hotels expected to spend record $6Billion this year on capital expenditures

A newly published study by Bjorn Hanson of the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism at the NYU School of Professional Studies predicts that a record-setting $6 billion will be spent in 2014 by the U.S. lodging industry on capital expenditures for remodeling and improving both guest rooms and public spaces.

Hanson says the spending increase is driven by deferred upgrades and improvements going back all the way to 2009 (no surprise there). Even though 2013 was a record year for remodeling and upgrades, 2014 is expected to beat that record with hoteliers' efforts to comply with brand standards and respond to consumer feedback on social media.

New study by Cornell University: LEED-certified green sustainable hotels make more money than non-LEED ones

A new study by Cornell University has found that hotels gain a revenue benefit when they are certified under the LEED sustainable building program.

The study compared the performance of 93 LEED-certified green sustainable US hotels (the number for which operating data were available) to that of 514 comparable (but non-LEED) hotel competitors, and found that the certified hotels obtained superior financial performance.

The hotel industry has embraced environmental sustainability. By comparing LEED certified green sustainable hotels with a competitive set of non-certified hotels, the study found substantial increases in average daily rates and revenue per available room for the LEED hotels.

10 Top Classic Las Vegas Restaurants from Forbes: Vintage Guide For Hungry Visitors

Okay I totally love almost everything about this list, quirky and eclectic, a lot of old school, and varied price ranges. Some of my personal hidden gem faves aren't on here (like Triple George Grill downtown), but I see a whole group of lounges and diners and restaurants I've missed that I have to try the next time I'm in Vegas!

"Surviving in Sin City is tough, which is why the few true Vegas classic eateries that have lasted are so impressive. Longevity in the restaurant business here is something to brag about, and the tried and true usually stays that way for very good reasons."

Great article on unique conversions around the world, from USA Today and Oyster. From prisons to plantations, the 10 hotels on this list were once the sites of quite different operations, and all have storied – whether eerie or interesting or just downright weird – pasts.
